Since 2011, Greenview has been the technical partner in developing the methodology for the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI). HCMI provides a standardized method for hotels to measure and report their carbon footprint, including:
- Emissions per floor area
- Emissions per occupied room
- Emissions per meeting space on hourly basis
HCMI was first launched in 2012 by the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) with contributions from 23 leading hospitality companies. With Greenview’s support as technical lead, the HCMI was refined and updated in 2016 and 2022 to ensure its accuracy and relevance to the hospitality industry.
Greenview also developed the latest free HCMI v2.0 Tool to enable hotels to calculate key carbon metrics, benchmark performance, share carbon impact with guests, and fulfil sustainability requirements in request for proposals (RFPs) from corporate clients.
The HCMI methodology is currently widely adopted by over 30,000 hotels and in use among major travel buyers, intermediaries, and destinations.
